On Wednesday, December 6, 2017, the Kentucky Derby Museum’s Outreach Program visited Taylor County Primary Center. Heather Hill, the outreach coordinator, presented two programs, “Creating Traditions” and “Mathin’ Around the Track,” to the second grade classes.
The first program, “Creating Traditions,” focused on why the Derby came about, Derby hats, the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home,” and the blanket of roses.
The second program, “Mathin’ Around the Track,” taught the students different math lessons and how math is used on a daily basis for team members who participate in the Derby. The students learned about problem solving, fractions, addition and subtraction, and time-telling.
