Taylor County School District Hosts 2nd Annual Personalized Learning Summit

On Tuesday, June 6th, 2017, Taylor County School District hosted its second annual personalized learning summit. The event was held at Taylor County High School and over 150 people were in attendance. Teachers and administrators traveled from Tennessee, Michigan, Missouri, South Carolina, Kansas, and Minnesota to gain first-hand experience on this innovative approach to teaching.

 

The morning started with a keynote speech from Superintendent Roger D. Cook and breakfast. The morning meal was catered by Taylor County High School culinary student-based enterprise, Cardinal Corral. TCHS Family & Consumer Science Teacher, Deana Shewmaker, oversees the culinary program.

 

Attendees were able to choose from six different learning sessions each hour throughout the day. Sessions included Creating a Student-Centered Primary Classroom, Removing the Ceiling: The Self-Paced Classroom, PBL: Projects with a Purpose, School Administration in Facilitating Personalized Learning, College & Career Readiness, Scheduling for Innovation, Cardinal Academy: Learning without Borders, Getting Googly/ Skype in the Classroom, Reading Between the Lines: ELA Innovations to Meet all Needs, Self-Pacing in Elementary: The Next Step, Self-Pacing a Themed-Based Novel Study and Project-Based Learning in the ELA Classroom, Dropout Prevention: Motivating the Unmotivated, Collaborative Classrooms: Tackling the Learning Spectrum, Student-Based Enterprises, and The Self-Paced Science Classroom: It Isn’t Rocket Science.”

 

During lunch, the TCHS Jazz Band performed light entertainment for the visitors. In addition to the jazz band, Kellie Jones, Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year, presented to the audience.

 

After lunch, visitors observed personalized learning during the Live Demonstrative Teaching sessions. Students and teachers participated in classroom activity just like they do during a normal school day.

 

The day ended with a Parent/ Student Panel. Attendees were able to ask Taylor County students and parents questions that they had about implementing personalized learning, how it works, concerns about their child engaging with older students, how to get teachers on board, etc. A special thanks to the panel that consisted of Roger D. Cook, Rhonda Yates, David Hall, Chloe Hall, Weston Young, Madelynn Yates, and Peyton McCubbin.

 

Lastly, Taylor County School District would like to thank our Student Ambassadors who helped with the event. And, Brothers BBQ for providing lunch and Sweet Hospitality for dessert.
