Our main priority is to keep our students and staff safe. At the same time, we want to continue to offer both in-person learning and distance learning based on family choice. In order to keep our students in school, we must continue to be proactive and flexible in our decision making.
In September, Taylor County saw a spike in Covid cases approximately a week and a half after Labor Day. We currently have two positive student cases and 33 students and four teachers quarantined. Many of our families and staff have indicated that they will be traveling during Fall Break. To be proactive in preventing a second spike due to out of state travel and social gatherings, the middle and high school will transition to an A/B schedule for three weeks following Fall Break, which will also take us to the end of the first nine weeks where we will then re-evaluate the schedule.
Middle and high schools students change classes and change groups throughout the day, which make contact tracing more difficult because students are in 7 different groups in any 2 day period. We also have the largest percentage of in-person learners at these two levels. The Gray/Red schedule will serve multiple purposes in reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Our data and contact tracing have indicated that the primary and intermediate schools should continue with their current schedules. Both the primary and intermediate students are self-contained with students staying in their homerooms. The same seating arrangements are maintained in their activity classes and lunch. There is very limited intermingling of different homerooms. This set-up is designed to limit the close contact each student has, allows for more effective contract tracing, and helps mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
When students return on Monday, October 12, Taylor County Middle School and Taylor County High School students will begin a Gray/Red Schedule. Taylor County Primary Center and Intermediate School will remain on their current schedule. Please see the attached schedule for details.
Due to Fall Break, please email your child’s school principal directly if you have any questions or if you need assistance with the Red/Gray scheduling.
